Part 2: Reading

In recent years, the language-learning industry has increasingly promoted the idea of personalisation: the promise that every learner can follow a path precisely adapted to their needs, preferences, and pace. At first glance, this seems both humane and efficient. After all, few would argue that a teenager preparing for an international exam and an adult hoping to negotiate confidently at work require identical instruction. Yet the enthusiasm for personalisation can sometimes obscure a less comfortable truth: learners do not always know what they need most. A student may request “more speaking practice” when the deeper issue is limited grammatical control; another may ask for advanced vocabulary while still relying on fragile sentence patterns.

This does not mean that learner preferences should be ignored. Motivation is not a decorative extra; it often determines whether a student continues long enough to improve. However, effective teaching requires a balance between responsiveness and professional judgement. A course that merely follows a learner’s immediate wishes may feel enjoyable, but it risks becoming a collection of pleasant activities rather than a coherent route towards progress. Conversely, a programme that is technically well-designed but indifferent to the learner’s interests may fail because the student never fully invests in it. The real challenge, therefore, is not choosing between structure and flexibility, but knowing when each should lead.
